The paranormal or the unknown is something that humans are most scared off;many directors over the years have used this to their advantage to create a more engaging experience. The list provides a way to revisit some of the films that you might have forgotten about or, enjoy for the first time.
Hereditary (2018)
If you are someone who is not looking for jump scares or the cliché elements found in most horror films and be engaged at all times with an original storyline, then this film is for you.
Hereditary is one of the most unsettling movies that the decade has to offer. The film is about a family, who after the death or their matriarch, start to unveil some sinister and dark secrets about their history that they have inherited. This process of revelation creates tension between all the family members and they fall into a spiral of mental doom. This film has by far one of the best endings on this list.
The Witch (2015)
The Witch is another film that tries to break away from the conventionalism of horror films. The film takes place in the 16th century New England, where a family is faced by a supernatural entity that lives in the woods, who causes many problems for them.
The film does not only rely on antics or scary music but it explores the idea of how a family breaks apart when they face such a situation. The thought of how the family spirals out of control is what makes it a more unnerving watch for the audience.
Insidious (2010)
The film revolves around a family that moves into a new house and faces a supernatural entity, a demon, who wants to take away their child.
The film uses all the conventional ways of scaring its audience from jump scares to one of the most unsettling soundtracks ever found in a horror film. The film is a bit subtle with its horror in the first half but then things start to escalate and lead you, to sleep with the lights on. A sequel of the film also released in 2013, only if you manage to make it through watching this entire film.
The Babadook (2014)
The Babadook is a film that revolves around the relationship of a mother and son. The boy is a problem child at school and at home. Everything starts going wrong when one night the mother reads her son a book called, Mr Babadook.
Mr Babadook is a story about a monster who wears a top hat, kind of like the monopoly man, who lives in your house and will visit you if you let him in. This film surely stands on its own compared to many other films of the decade as well. The Babadook does a really good job of using mental illness and grief as a channel to create a proper unsettling psychological thriller.
IT (2017)
IT (2017) is a blockbuster horror film which is a screenplay adaptation from the 1990 version of the same name and a Steven King novel. IT revolves around the story of Pennywise the clown who haunts the small fictional town of Derry. This film is a nightmare come to life, the visual esthetic of a clown in the first place is something unsettling for most people, and this film takes that to a whole new level and adds a shape-shifting, ancient monster behind it. The 1990 version of the same film was a horror master piece itself but with all the technological advancements the film makes for one of the best viewing experiences.
