Journaling Prompts for Self-Exploration and Mindfulness

by Maham Asif

We have been in lockdown for 3 weeks now, many people are still sulking over being in quarantine while others have utilized their free time to perform various activities, ranging from reconnecting withtheir friends or spending more time with their families to starting a new hobby or revisiting an old hobby they had disconnected with over the past years.
The first few things many people did once the lockdown started was to organize and de-clutter their homes and adopt an extensive self-care routine, butrarely anyone indulged in de-cluttering their mind or embarking on the journey to achieve peace of mind.
The following prompts are for everyone who need inspiration to write, everyone who need an outlet to relieve mental stress, everyone who need a reminder to stay positive during these testing times.

Make a list of 10 things that you are grateful for.

If your body could speak what would it say to you.

“Write about a time when work felt real to you, necessary and satisfying. Paid or unpaid, professional or domestic, physical or mental.” (A prompt from Barbara Abercrombie’s book, Kicking in the Wall)

What thought/memory brings tears to your eyes or pain to your heart?
(As Paulo Coelho said “Tears are words that need to be written”)

Make a list of everything that inspires you, from books to movies to quotes to people to paintings to the sky and the stars.

“Write about a moment experienced through your body. Making love, making breakfast, going to a party, having a fight, an experience you’ve had or you imagine for your character. Leave out thought and emotion, and let all information be conveyed through the body and senses.” (A prompt from Barbara Abercrombie’s book, Kicking in The Wall)

What 5 activities would you like to doonce lockdown ends.

If you feel bored or stressed out, you can take up journaling for the next 7 days. And if it helps you get to know yourself better and achieve peace of mind, it could be your new hobby!
