DR MIHAELA GULYAS’S Highly Recommends IPL for Rosacea

by Grazia

Dr Mihaela Gulyas is the founder and lead clinician at SKNCode London, an aesthetic clinic known for its evidence-
led, no-nonsense approach to skin health. With a particular interest in vascular and inflammatory skin conditions, she has built a reputation among her patients for treatments that are as considered as they are effective favouring honest consultations and realistic expectations over quick fixes. Rosacea, in particular, is a condition close to her clinical heart: one she describes as “often misunderstood, and far too often mismanaged.”

The Great Redness Debate: Can IPL Really Calm Rosacea?
Let’s talk about redness. Not the flattering, just-been-for-a-brisk-walk kind, but the persistent, won’t-take-no-for-an-answer kind that so many rosacea sufferers know all too well. It’s the sort of thing concealer can only do so much about, and frankly, we’re rather bored of pretending otherwise. Enter Intense Pulsed Light or IPL, as it’s more snappily known which has quietly become one of the most talked-about tools in the fight against rosacea’s more stubborn symptoms. At SKNCode London, Dr Mihaela has been using the Alma Harmony Bio-Boost platform, and she’s refreshingly candid about both what it can, and can’t, do.
“There is no cure for rosacea, and anyone who tells you otherwise isn’t being straight with you,” says Dr Mihaela. “What IPL offers is control a way of meaningfully calming the visible symptoms, so people can feel more like themselves again.”

-So, how does it actually work?

Without getting too textbook about it, IPL works by targeting the haemoglobin in those small, troublesome blood vessels sitting just beneath the skin’s surface, while sparing the surrounding tissue from unnecessary heat. Think of it as a rather clever bit of precision engineering.

“It’s this precision that makes the Alma Harmony Bio-Boost such a versatile option,” Dr Mihaela explains. “We’re able to reduce redness, even out skin tone and encourage collagen production all in one sitting. Patients often leave not just with calmer skin, but genuinely brighter, healthier-looking skin too.”

Another point in its favour: it’s not a one- size-fits-all affair. Treatment settings can be adjusted according to skin type and rosacea severity, meaning protocols are built around the individual rather than the other way round. And for the time-poor among us, downtime is minimal most patients are back to their diaries within a day or so.

-The bit nobody likes to hear

Here’s where we put the rose-tinted glasses down. IPL is brilliant, but it’s not magic, and it’s certainly not a one-and-done affair. “Rosacea is a chronic, inflammatory condition,” Dr Mihaela reminds us.

“Maintenance treatments are usually part of the picture, and results won’t hold if the basics are ignored daily SPF, a sensible skincare routine, and genuinely knowing your triggers.”

And yes, those triggers are exactly the usual suspects you were hoping to avoid hearing about: alcohol, spicy food, heat and stress can all still set things off, even after a course of successful treatment. Rosacea, it seems, doesn’t believe in retirement. IPL also isn’t the right fit for everyone. Very tanned skin, certain darker skin tones, and some medical conditions or medications that heighten light sensitivity can rule it out. “This is precisely why a proper consultation matters,” says Dr Mihaela. “It’s not a treatment to book on a whim — it needs an experienced eye behind it.”

The verdict

For the right patient, under the right guidance, Alma Harmony Bio-Boost IPL is a genuinely excellent option safe, non-invasive, and capable of making a real difference to both how skin looks and how patients feel about it. Not a miracle cure, then, but when paired with a proper personalised plan and a bit of ongoing discipline, it’s about as close as rosacea sufferers are likely to get to lasting calm. As Dr Mihaela puts it: “It’s not about chasing perfection. It’s about giving people their confidence back.”
