Love or hate them: Five negative characters that became fan favourites

by Maria Tahir

Generally, it’s the love or betrayal that hooks the audience to understand the shades and profundity of the characters on screen. The former performed by the charming hero and the latter requires the one with a devilish persona who we abhor yet regard

The reel marinated with real occurrence requires a strong script and an exceptional individual to indulge the ones viewing the content. It’s not always the black and white part that garners the attention but the grey section in between the two is equally responsible for the coherence and balance of the story. Below are the 5 drama characters we love to hate.

Ayeza Khan as Mehwish in Mere Paas Tum Ho

With the tables now turning, the portrayal of Pakistani women in media has changed drastically providing depth and empowerment to female characters. The unapologetically ambitious Mehiwsh played by Ayeza Khan in Meray Pass Tum Ho portrays a woman stepping out and cheated her husband with tensions and suspense alongside. Ayeza, provided by a grey playground to act successfully broke the stereotypical image of a heroine that resulted in the appreciation and applause she received for her performance.

Aisha khan as Jeena in Mann Mayal:

To prove her versatility, Aisha Khan jumped into a character that is a go-getter, different, and powerful at the same time. From Jeena’s “mere tou maa baap bhi nahi hein” to the inquisitive persona, she delivers her role with the finest details. Aisha also received a lot of criticism and was the subject of multiple memes that season, all of which eventually added up to the success of her character. With Jeena, Aisa made the audience fall in love with her completely and utterly.

Pankaj Tripathi as Kaleen Bhaiyya in Mirzapur:

Kaleen Bhaiyya, a gangster who is under the influence of the power presented his devious persona wisely in the web series, Mirzapur. The brazen approach to highlight the social evils in our society has made the role of Pankaj unforgettable. The amalgamation of the intricate details of the character to the violence and darkness together paved the road to success for Pankaj and as a result, the audience is in awe of his delivery.

Andrew Scott as James Moriarty in Sherlock Holmes:

A consulting criminal, narcissist, and sadistic individual with extreme intelligence, James Moriarty with his playfulness and childish sense of humor stole the show in Sherlock Holmes. He came as a challenge to the protagonist Sherlock, who adopted the same sarcastic tone and the persona that disturbs the opponent. Dialogues like “Sorry boys, I’m so changeable!” to the inventiveness makes James a psychotic mastermind we all fell in!

Nawazuddin Siddiqui as Ganesh Gaitonde in Sacred Games:

Nawazuddin Siddiqui has played one of the most menacing villains in the digital world on the Netflix series. The actor with his monologues and the expressions has illuminated the play with his performance. The voice-over in a story of redemption supported by the ferocious entity and the philosophy was well narrated by Nawaz. The one who makes his own rules and plays the game, stealing nothing but our hearts on the way.
