Busting 5 Myths about feminism

by Aiiesha Khalid

If you’re reading this, chances areyou’re either a feminist, one to bring them down or just an individual willing to evolve. Either way this article is the one for you.

In a world where ‘like a girl’ is an insult and ‘Feminist’, a dirty word, feminism and its activists are quick to be demonized. So quick that if one screams there’s a tornado and screams feminist, our masses will run faster at the latter. This is why these are the 5 most common myths about feminism that need busting ASAP.

‘Feminism is wanting superiority’

Everyone that preaches those words are the ones that could use the help of an encyclopedia. Being a Feminist in the simplest form of words, means the advocacy of women’s rights on the grounds of social, moral, political, economic, and personal equality of both sexes. Nobody asked to be above!Nobody asked for superiority but wholesome unwaverede quality! Those are the values that a true Feminist stands for. The elevation of women doesn’t stand for the fall of men. Period!!

‘There is no need of feminism’
This one is for the gods of ignorance, who use oblivion as means to brush under the carpet the grave reality of thousands of women or just a desperate phrase used by individuals to fuel their sexist agendas.

Feminism is fundamental in today’s day and age, where women are still facing injustice as a result of daily gender discrimination. Therefore the hunt and fight for equality will prevail till the day unequal wages aren’t eradicated, till the day women aren’t shamed for doing the same things men are praised for, till the day honor killings come to a halt and till the day new born girls aren’t given death sentences based on their gender.

We need feminism because being a girl should never be a reason to fear for your life. So, till that day comes, feminism is needed in every household.

‘Feminism is for the ‘modern women’
We will say this once and loud for the people in the back. Feminism is not defined by the status, color, race or the ethnicity of a woman. This is a collective movement with one sole agenda; gaining equality and donot let the perpetrators tell you otherwise.

Feminism is as much of a cooperate woman’s that deals with a glass ceiling, as it is of a ‘stay home’ mom who is a victim of suppression at the hands of society.
Nevertheless, let us enlighten you.The reason of such a correlation between the modernity and feminism of a woman is due to her privilege, the privilege of being able to vocalizeher values and beliefs. So no, feminism isn’t limited to modern women but is practiced by them in order stand up for the ones on the other side of the spectrumthat have been silenced.

‘Feminism is Anti men’
Individuals who aren’t educated enough about the movement are quick to assume that feminism is the liberation of women at the expense of men. However,we aren’t men haters!People!! Even though propaganda makes it seem so, reality is, men have enough as it is, we can’t be making this about them too. The only thing we are anti is inequality, irrespective of the gender that practices it.

‘Female Feminists can’t be feminine’
Ladies listen up! You can wear the brightest shade of pink for 7 days a week. You can have marriage plans set by the age of 16. You can quit work to mother your children, and basically do whatever you want and as long as you have your girls back, you’re a feminist.

Being a feminist isn’t like applying for a job, where physical and mental requirements need to be met, the movement isn’t defined by personal life choices or which color is your favorite. If you believe in the equality of both the genders, you are a feminist and no literary individual with a buzzcut and love for abstract art can tell you otherwise. So, wear that pink and uplift all your yoni buddies!
