5 Natural Ingredients You Should Never Put on Your Skin

by Pakhi Rajesh Kumar Dixit

Being ‘Desis’ we have come to believe that all-natural ingredients are beneficial for our skin. But this is not true. Because of our unawareness, we do not really know that many ingredients should never be applied on the skin directly.

In search of flawless skin, we do tend to apply products that happen to be in our kitchen, but a lot of times, unknowingly it backfires. Here is a list of 5 ingredients you should watch out for!

Apple Cider Vinegar

Apple Cider Vinegar is considered a god product for weight loss and clear skin. But using undiluted ACV directly on your skin will induce stinging sensations leaving you with a funny smell. Long-time undiluted ACV can corrode your face due to high acidic levels. Vinegar is caustic if you leave it on your skin and in no case should be applied on broken skin, pimples, fresh wounds etc because you will be at a risk of burning your skin.

Cinnamon

Cinnamon should not be used directly on the face. Direct application will leave you will light burn and redness. Although cinnamon is one antibacterial spice, it still is one of the most notoriously allergic ones. And even if you are not allergic to cinnamon, you might still be at risk of sustaining a burn if you are someone with hypersensitive skin.

Lemon or lime juice

It is said that lemon juice lightens blemishes, acne scars or any hyperpigmentation. But the ‘psoralens’ in lemons cause a phototoxic reaction on your skin when it gets exposed to UV light. In this case, your efforts to get rid of a pimple could result in a big blister. The rash or burn, called ‘Phyto-photodermatitis’, appears one to three days after you have been in some sun with lemon/lime juice on your face and could last for a couple of weeks.

Egg White

Putting a smooth raw egg white on your face while having breakfast seems convenient. Thinking of having a tightened skin goes down in the drain once you rinse it off. Getting infections on your skin is also possible, specially over a scratch or healing blemishes or wounds.

Baking Soda

Baking soda is highly alkaline which diminishes the pH balance of your skin and leads to a very dry and scratchy-irritating skin. pH on our skin acts as a natural barrier to keep bacteria out. When this gets disbalanced, it can cause you to breakout.

Word of caution – always do a patch test behind ears before applying any DIY product, face pack or natural ingredient on your face.
