Long and beautiful hair is something we crave. We use expensive shampoos, conditioners and spa treatments but we forget the key ingredient – oils!

Remember how our grandmother and mother nagged us when we were kids to regularly oil our hair in order to combat dryness, frizz and split ends? Good hair oils reverse the damages such as dry scalp, dandruff and add shine, beauty and nourishment to the hair.

So here are 5 easily available oils to help you turn around those frizzy hair this winter season!

Coconut Oil

Coconut Oil is one of the most popular hair oils and often the first one in the list because it aids growth and nourishes scalp as well. Fatty acids in the oil strengthens hair follicles. It is also packed with carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals that are good for overall health of the hair. Coconut oil in small amount can be a replacement for conditioners because it is rich in Vitamin E. It protects hair from sun damage and naturally repairs split ends. It is highly recommended for the ones with damaged or dull hair. Continuous use for a month or two shows results with people who struggle with slow hair growth.

Almond Oil

Almond oil works wonders for both the skin and hair. It is one of the highest in natural vitamin E and fatty acids, proteins and antioxidants, along with magnesium, helping in the reduction of hair breakage. Apart from moisturising it also locks in the moisture and protects against hair loss. People who lack who lack omega-3 fatty acids in their bodies and frequently suffer from hair fall should leave it overnight and wash it off with a nourishing shampoo the next morning.

Olive Oil

Olive oil is the most versatile. It is protective as itshields the natural keratin in your hair and is a natural conditioner because of antioxidants. Use the organic, extra virgin version for best results. Rich in vitamin E, it is great for hair growth and oleic acid locks the moisture, giving the hair a softened, smooth texture. Because of being anti-inflammatory in nature, this oil helps combat dandruff specially when used with lemon juice. It also gives damaged hair a healthy appearance. Those who struggle with frequent frizzy hair can use this oil by applying it on dry or damp hair and then wrapping a warm towel around your hair for 20 to 30 minutes before heading for bath and washing it off.

Lavender Oil

Extracted from lavender flowers, it is an essential oil that promotes hair growth leaving the hair looking fuller and thicker. It helps increase the number of hair follicles and is known for antimicrobial and antiseptic qualities. When massaged with a carrier oil, it can improve circulation in the scalp and reducing hair loss.
The most important one is that it improves hair growth right from the follicles. It moisturises the scalp and balances the sebum production in the scalp.
It is an essential oil, so it is best used with a carrier oil like coconut or olive oil. Best not to use it directly on the hair or scalp. You can mix about 10 drops of lavender oil in two tablespoons of carrier oil and massage into the scalp. Keep it overnight. People who have oily hair in phases can be most benefited with it.

Castor Oil

Castor Oil comes off as thick because of it being packed with proteins, vitamin E and minerals. It helps get rid of dandruff and the ricin-oleic acid in it helps relieve scalp inflammations and itchiness. Castor oil softens hair because it maintains the moisture level and aids in blood circulation. Those who suffer from dry, flaky scalp should apply it on the scalp and lightly over the hair. Leave it overnight and wash it off with an organic shampoo thoroughly the next day. You can also dilute it with sesame oil to reduce the viscosity.
